ARTIST STATEMENT

When writing about the creative process, Henry Moore said that some artists work within a theme as that allows them the ability to try out a myriad of ideas. Moore wrote, “The subject matter frees one and yet it gives what one does a continuity.” Returning over and over again to the female figure, I have been exploring a range of ideas using the contours of realism combined with forms of abstraction to infuse figures with an emotive presence.

My work considers the structure of the form in space. Building a 3D structure within a 2D world, I sculpt the outer and inner surfaces of the forms. This work explores the figure, its emotive presence as well as themes of feminism, identity, and representation. With a focus on the figure, the work synthesizes figuration and landscape, color and spatial composition, tradition and innovation. As Moore said, “The subject matter frees one,” and I return to the figure and that freedom over and over again.
